Scale
- 10-12 medium apples and pears (about 8 cups), peeled, cored, and chopped
- 2 tsp lemon juice
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1 1/2 Tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp allspice
- 1/2 tsp salt
- Heaping 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 Tbsp molasses
- 1/3 cup flour
- 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats
- 1 cup raw pecan pieces
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon (for topping)
- 7/8 stick vegetable shortening, melted
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 13×9-inch baking dish.
- In a big mixing bowl, toss the chopped apples and pears with 2 tsp lemon juice so they don’t brown.
- Sprinkle in 1/2 cup white sugar, 1 1/2 Tbsp cornstarch, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp nutmeg, 1/4 tsp allspice, and 1/2 tsp salt.
- Stir until every piece of fruit is coated and glossy.
- Pour the fruit mixture into the baking dish and spread it out.
- In a separate bowl, mix heaping 1/2 cup brown sugar with 1 Tbsp molasses, 1/3 cup flour, 3/4 cup oats, 1 cup pecans, and 1/2 tsp cinnamon.
- Pour in the melted shortening and mix with a fork until it clumps like wet sand.
- Sprinkle the topping evenly over the fruit.
- Bake for 45–60 minutes, or until the fruit is bubbling and the top is golden and crisp.
- Let it rest for 10–15 minutes before serving so the juices thicken.
- Serve warm — ice cream is optional but highly recommended.
