Description

This shortbread is all about real butter, no margarine allowed. It’s simple, buttery, and melts in your mouth.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 500g real butter, softened
  • 1 cup icing sugar
  • 1 tsp salt (only if your butter is unsalted)
  • 4 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Heat your oven to 320°F.
  2. Mix butter and icing sugar (plus salt if needed) until smooth.
  3. Add flour one cup at a time and mix well. The dough will be stiff.
  4. Press the dough into a lined baking pan, flatten it, and poke holes with a fork (a fun job for kids!).
  5. Bake for 45 minutes or until the edges turn light brown.
  6. Cut the shortbread right away, then let it cool fully before moving it.
  7. You can dip the pieces in chocolate if you want, but plain is perfect too.
  8. The flavor gets better after a day or two. It stores well for at least three weeks.

This recipe is great for making big batches. It keeps well and makes a thoughtful homemade gift, just pack it in pretty tins and share.

Try it once, and you’ll see why this simple shortbread is a classic favorite.
