Description

Homemade Classic Sandwich Bread that’s softer than store-bought. Fluffy inside, golden outside, simple and rewarding

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup cold water plus up to 2/3 cup hot water (add gradually)
  • 4 tbsp melted butter or shortening
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 packet dry yeast

Instructions

  1. Proof yeast in warm water with sugar until foamy (about 5 minutes).
  2. Mix in flour, milk, butter, and salt.
  3. Add more water gradually until the dough is soft but not sticky.
  4. Knead 6–8 minutes on a greased surface until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place in a greased bowl, cover with clingfilm, and let rise 1–2 hours until fluffy.
  6. Shape into an 8-inch log, place in a greased 8×4-inch loaf pan, and rise again for about 60 minutes, until the dough is 1 inch above the pan.
  7. Bake at 180°C/350°F for 30–35 minutes, until golden. Tap the bottom; it should sound hollow.
  8. Cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
