Description

If you’ve never tried daltjies, you’re in for a treat. These golden little fritters are crispy on the outside, soft and flavorful on the inside, and pack just the right amount of heat to make things interesting. They’re the ultimate snack, whether you’re hosting friends or just treating yourself.

Instructions

  1. Combine the dry ingredients, flours, spices, and salt, into a bowl.
  2. Toss in the chopped chilies, onions, and spinach and mix.
  3. Beat the egg with a splash of water to create your wet mix.
  4. Pour this into the dry ingredients and stir until you have a smooth batter.
  5. If it feels a bit stiff, add more water little by little.
  6. Just before frying in a deep pot or pan, mix in the baking powder. This will make the daltjies nice and puffy.
  7. Heat some sunflower oil in a deep pan.
  8. When it’s hot enough, scoop out a teaspoon of batter and use another teaspoon to gently slide it into the oil.
  9. Fry in small batches until golden brown and crispy.
  10. Transfer them onto paper towels to soak up any extra oil.
  11. Serve with your favorite dip, mint yogurt, tamarind chutney, or even a garlicky one.Β
