Description
Soft buttery dough topped with jam makes Hungarian Tart Squares a home-style favorite. Perfect for tea or coffee breaks.

- 125g margarine
- 2 tbsp cooking oil
- 1 beaten egg
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 2 tbsp castor sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla essence
- 2 cups sifted cake flour
- Jam for spreading (apricot, strawberry, or mixed fruit)
Instructions
- Cream 125g margarine with 2 tbsp castor sugar until fluffy.
- Mix in 2 tbsp cooking oil and 1/2 tsp vanilla essence.
- Stir in 1 beaten egg. It might look a little loose, but that’s okay.
- Combine 2 cups of cake flour and 2 tsp of baking powder, then fold into the wet mix until it looks like breadcrumbs.
- Turn onto a floured surface and knead lightly to a smooth dough. Divide in half.
- Press one half into a greased 20x20cm dish, prick with a fork.
- Spread your jam over the base. Warm it slightly if stiff.
- Grate the second half of the dough over the jam.
- Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 30 minutes, or until golden.
- Dust with icing sugar and cool before cutting into squares.
