Description

Soft homemade sliced bread made with white bread flour, instant yeast, and warm water for the perfect everyday loaf. This easy recipe rises high, slices well, and uses simple steps for beginners and seasoned bakers.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3 1/2 cups (500 g) white bread flour
  • 1 packet instant yeast
  • 2 tsp castor sugar
  • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt
  • 2 tbsp melted butter or olive oil
  • 300 ml lukewarm water

Instructions

  1. Grab a big mixing bowl and stir together the 3½ cups white bread flour, 1 packet instant yeast, 2 tsp castor/caster sugar, and ½ tsp fine sea salt.
  2. Pour in the 2 tbsp melted butter or olive oil and cut it through the dry mix with a butter knife. It’ll look a little shaggy at first.
  3. Add the 300 ml lukewarm water and mix until it comes together into a soft dough.
  4. Tip the dough onto a lightly floured countertop and knead until it’s smooth, soft, and springs back when you poke it.
  5. Lightly oil a clean bowl, pop the dough inside, cover with a dishcloth, and let it rise somewhere warm until it doubles in size.
  6. Punch the dough down, shape it into a rough oval, and fold the sides in toward the center. Tuck it into a greased 30 cm loaf pan.
  7. Let the dough rise again until it puffs up and doubles.
  8. Heat your oven to 180C/350F.
  9. Bake the loaf for 30 to 35 minutes, and check that it sounds hollow when you tap the bottom.
  10. Cool it in the pan for a few minutes, then turn it out onto a wire rack and let it cool completely.
  11. Slice when fully cooled so it doesn’t squish.
