Description

This basic scone recipe is simple, quick, and super versatile. Use it as your go-to for plain scones or jazz it up with berries, cheese, herbs, or chocolate chips.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1 egg, beaten into enough milk to make 1 cup total liquid

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 380°F (190°C) and line 2 baking sheets with parchment.
  2. In a big bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Melt the butter and mix it into the dry ingredients until crumbly.
  4. Add the egg-and-milk mixture and stir until just combined. Don’t overmix.
  5. Roll the dough about 2½ inches thick and shape into a round.
  6. Cut into 8 wedges and place on the baking sheets.
  7. Bake for about 15 minutes, or until golden and puffed.

Tip: These taste amazing warm with butter, jam, or cream. Add extras like raisins, blueberries, or even cheddar before baking for a twist.
