Description
These toasted sandwiches are a South African favorite at any BBQ. Crispy on the outside, melty on the inside, they’re packed with cheese, tomato, and onion. Simple, smoky, and always a hit.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 slices of white or brown bread
- 3 tablespoons soft butter
- 1 to 3 onions (thinly sliced)
- 2 tomatoes (sliced)
- Grated or sliced cheese
- Salt and black pepper
Optional extras:
- Chutney or mayonnaise
- Fresh herbs (basil, parsley, chives, or coriander)
Instructions
- Butter both sides of each bread slice. This helps them go golden and crispy on the grill.
- Layer onion and tomato slices onto half the bread.
- Add a pinch of salt and pepper, then pile on the cheese.
- If you want, spread on some chutney or mayo, and sprinkle over fresh herbs.
- Close the sandwiches with the remaining slices.
- Lightly oil your BBQ grid, place the sandwiches on it, and toast them slowly.
- Flip now and then until both sides are golden and crisp.
- Serve hot while the cheese is still gooey.
These are the best fresh off the fire, melty, crunchy, and full of flavor. Perfect next to anything you’re grilling.
