Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 roll shop-bought puff pastry
  • 450 g extra lean beef mince
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 large tomato, skinned and chopped
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup boiling water
  • 1 large carrot, sliced into rings
  • 1 large potato, cubed
  • 1/4 cup frozen peas
  • 1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp white pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic & herb seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp thyme
  • 1/2 tsp Origanum
  • Pinch green onion spice (optional)
  • Pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1 whisked egg (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and lightly grease an ovenproof dish.
  2. In a large pan, sauté 1 large, chopped onion and 1 tsp minced garlic over medium heat until soft and fragrant.
  3. Add 450 g beef mince and cook for about 3 minutes, breaking it up as it browns.
  4. Stir in 2 tbsp tomato paste, 2 tbsp tomato sauce, and 1 chopped tomato.
  5. Cook for 3 minutes so everything blends.
  6. Add 1 tsp sugar, 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, and all your spices — salt, white pepper, paprika, garlic & herb seasoning, thyme, Origanum, a small pinch of green onion spice, and cayenne.
  7. Mix well.
  8. Toss in 1 sliced carrot, 1 cubed potato, and 1/4 cup peas.
  9. Pour in 1/4 cup boiling water and let it simmer for 20 minutes until the veggies are soft, and the sauce has thickened. Let the mixture cool completely.
  10. Roll out half the puff pastry and line the base of your greased dish.
  11. Spoon in the cooled mince filling evenly.
  12. Lay the remaining pastry over the top, sealing the edges gently. Brush with whisked egg.
  13. Bake for 30 minutes until golden and puffed.
  14. Let it rest for a few minutes before slicing.
