Description

South African cream-filled doughnuts, bring together a rich cultural heritage and an indulgent treat that has delighted generations. These doughnuts trace their roots back to Dutch settlers, who brought their culinary traditions to South Africa in the 17th century. Over time, this simple pastry evolved, incorporating local ingredients and techniques to create a distinctly South African delicacy.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Doughnut

  • 4 cups Flour
  • 1 1/2 cups Lukewarm Milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of Dry Yeast
  • 1 Egg
  • 1/2 t Salt
  • 1/2 Stick of Butter
  • 1/4 cup of Sugar
  • 1 t Vanilla Extract

For syrup

  • 1 1/2 cups of sugar
  • 1 cup of water

For the filling:

  • 2 cups of heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the syrup by boiling the sugar and water together for 10 minutes and set it aside.
  2. Start by warming the milk.
  3. Add the yeast and a teaspoon each of the sugar and flour.
  4. Set aside and let it sit until it blooms.
  5. Sift all dry ingredients together.
  6. Beat the egg well and mix all the ingredients.
  7. Knead your dough well and let it rise until it doubles in size.
  8. Keep it covered and in a warm place.
  9. Shape the dough into the desired size.
  10. You will be able to make 24 good-sized oblong doughnuts from this mixture.
  11. Fry in deep oil until golden brown.
  12. Once done, dip them in syrup, set them aside, and let them cool.

For the filling:

  1. Beat 2 cups of heavy cream and 2 tablespoons of sugar until it forms soft peaks.
  2. Gently cut the doughnut in the middle, but be careful not to cut through.
  3. Spoon jam (your desired choice) into the middle, if you prefer.
  4. Use a piping bag to add the cream, and finally, add a dollop of jam, or a cherry if you wish, on top to pretty it up.
  5. Now it’s ready to be enjoyed.
