Description
This cake is soft, moist, and full of rich chocolate flavor. You don’t need any fancy tools; just a bowl, a whisk (or mixer), and a few basic ingredients. It’s quick to mix and always comes out perfectly, whether you’re baking it as a layer cake or a simple sheet cake.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 2 tsp baking soda
- Pinch of salt
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups sugar
- 1/2 cup oil
- 1 cup boiling water or hot coffee
- 2 eggs
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Line two 23cm round pans or one 23x33cm rectangular pan with wax paper.
- Grease both the paper and the sides of the pan.
- In a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla.
- Beat for about 2 minutes using an electric mixer or whisk until smooth.
- Carefully stir in the boiling water or hot coffee. The batter will be thin, that’s okay!
- Pour the batter evenly into your prepared pan(s).
- Bake for 30–40 minutes. If you’re using one large pan, it may take a bit longer.
- Check for doneness by sticking a toothpick into the center, it should come out clean.
- Run a knife around the edges, flip the cake out onto a wire rack, and peel off the paper.
- Let the cake cool completely before adding any icing or toppings.
Tips:
- Hot coffee deepens the chocolate flavor, but boiling water works great too.
- This cake pairs well with any frosting, chocolate, vanilla, or even whipped cream.
