What is Chicken Shawarma made of?

Chicken Shawarma is a Middle Eastern dish of garlicky poultry served on pitas (Meat can also be used). This chicken version is flavored with a savory yogurt sauce. This quick and easy chicken recipe is one the whole family will love. It adds some flair to the usual, plain grilled chicken.


Units Scale

Pita bread

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp. oil
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 2 tsp instant yeast

Chicken filling

  • 5 fillets
  • 2 tbsp. Aminas Tikka marinade
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/4 cup Nandos Bushveld braai sauce
  • 1 tsp ginger and garlic paste
  • 1 tsp masala
  • Salt and pepper
  • Thyme


Pita bread

  1. Sift flour and then add salt and yeast
  2. Add oil and water
  3. Combine to make a soft dough
  4. Knead for 5 minutes
  5. Place in a bowl, cover with cling wrap
  6. Leave to rise for an hour
  7. Then gently punch it down
  8. Break into 6 pieces and roll into balls
  9. Cover, leave to rest for 30 minutes
  10. Roll out very gently
  11. Roll into about half a cm thickness
  12. Cook on a hot non-stick pan or Tawa

Chicken filling

  1. Marinate the fillet in the marinade, yogurt, braai sauce, garlic paste, masala, salt, pepper, and thyme.
  2. Refrigerate for 1 to 2 hrs
  3. Cook in the oven at 180C for 1 hr, covered in foil
  4. Then shred the cooked chicken
  5. Mix with mayonnaise or sauce when you’re filling the pita bread
  6. You can add caramelized onions as well.
