Description
Fresh, filling and ready in minutes, this tuna bowl is exactly the sort of lunch I make when I want something good without making a production of it. Creamy avocado, crisp cucumber, green onion and tangy balsamic give plain tuna a surprisingly tasty little upgrade.
Ingredients
- 1 tin (170 g tin or 120 g drained) flaked light tuna, well drained
- 1 green onion (20 to 25 g), or regular onion if that’s what you have, thinly sliced
- 1 baby cucumber (about 100 g), or English cucumber, cut into small pieces
- 1 avocado (about 150 g), diced
- 1 TBS balsamic vinegar
- A good sprinkling of Everything But the Bagel seasoning
Instructions
- Thoroughly drain 1 tin (170 g tin or 120 g drained) of flaked light tuna, pressing out as much excess water as you can. You don’t want watery tuna making the bowl soggy.
- Thinly slice 1 green onion or regular onion if that’s what you have (20 to 25 g) and cut the baby or English cucumber (about 100 g) into small pieces.
- Dice 1 avocado (about 150 g) just before assembling so it stays fresh-looking and doesn’t have much time to brown.
- Add 1 tin of drained flaked light tuna, 1 green onion/regular onion (20 to 25 g), 1 baby cucumber/English cucumber (about 100 g) and 1 avocado (about 150 g) to a serving bowl.
- Drizzle 1 tbs. balsamic vinegar over everything; give it a good sprinkling of Everything But the Bagel seasoning. Give it a gentle mix, so the avocado doesn’t turn into complete mush.
- Taste before adding any salt. The tuna and Everything But the Bagel seasoning can already bring plenty of salt to the bowl.
- Chill for about 10 to 15 minutes if you like your lunch cold, then dig in. If you’re hungry now, though, I won’t make you wait.
- The easiest way to make this taste fresh is to keep the vegetables crisp, drain the tuna properly and add the avocado at the last minute. Don’t be tempted to overcomplicate it either. The creamy avocado, sharp balsamic and savoury seasoning are doing most of the work already.

Additional Information
- Can I use regular cucumber? Yes. Use about 100 g English cucumber in place of the baby cucumber. If it’s particularly watery, remove some of the soft centre and seeds first so they don’t dilute the bowl.
- How important is draining the tuna? It matters quite a bit. Drain the 170 g tin thoroughly to about 120 g drained tuna. Excess water can make the balsamic mixture watery and soften the cucumber.
- Can I use tuna packed in oil? Yes. Tuna packed in oil works well, although the finished bowl will be richer. Drain it thoroughly before adding it to the other ingredients.
- Can I prepare Balsamic Tuna Avocado Crunch ahead? You can prepare the tuna, cucumber and green onion ahead, but add the avocado shortly before serving. This keeps the avocado fresher and helps prevent it from becoming too soft or brown.
- How long can leftovers be stored? For the best texture, eat the prepared bowl the same day. Leftovers can be covered and refrigerated for up to 1 day, although the avocado may soften and darken slightly.
- How should leftovers be stored? Place the leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate them promptly. If possible, press plastic wrap directly against the surface to reduce the avocado’s exposure to air.
- Can I use lemon juice instead of balsamic vinegar? Yes. Lemon juice gives the bowl a brighter, sharper flavour. You can also use lime juice or red wine vinegar, starting with a smaller amount and adjusting to taste.
- What can I use instead of Everything But the Bagel seasoning? Use a combination of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried onion and a little garlic powder. Alternatively, season with black pepper and a small amount of salt after tasting.
- Can I add other ingredients? Absolutely. Cherry tomatoes, bell pepper, sweet corn, feta, fresh herbs, toasted seeds or chopped nuts can all work well. Add crunchy toppings just before serving so they stay crisp.
- How do I stop the avocado from browning? Cut the avocado shortly before serving and mix it in gently. Keeping the prepared bowl covered and refrigerated also slows browning.
- Should I add salt? Taste first. Canned tuna and Everything But the Bagel seasoning can already contain plenty of salt, so extra salt may not be necessary.
- How should I mix the ingredients? Use a gentle hand when combining everything. Overmixing can turn the avocado into a mash, while a few intact pieces give Balsamic Tuna Avocado Crunch a much nicer texture.
- Can I make the portion larger? Yes. Simply multiply the ingredients according to the number of servings you need. Keep the same general balance of tuna, avocado and cucumber, then adjust the balsamic and seasoning to taste.

Balsamic Tuna Avocado Crunch gives canned tuna a fresh upgrade with creamy avocado, crisp cucumber, green onion and tangy balsamic. It takes about 10 minutes, requires no cooking and delivers enough texture and flavour to make a genuinely satisfying lunch. It’s an easy choice when hunger strikes and there’s no interest in making a complicated meal.
