Treat yourself to these timeless Crunchies aka Skurwejantjies
Crunchies, also known as Skurwejantjies in Afrikaans, are a beloved South African treat with a rich history tied to the country’s cultural heritage. These oat-based bars are similar to British flapjacks but have a distinctly South African twist with the inclusion of ingredients like golden syrup, coconut, and sometimes dried fruits.

Background
Crunchies likely evolved from the British flapjack during the colonial period, when South African cuisine was influenced by British settlers. The name Skurwejantjies means “little rough ones” in Afrikaans, a nod to their crumbly, rustic texture.
Over time, Crunchies became a staple in South African households, especially valued for their simplicity and the use of pantry staples like oats and syrup. They are often made in large batches, perfect for sharing with family and friends, making them a symbol of community and togetherness.

Today, Crunchies are enjoyed across South Africa and by South Africans abroad, often evoking a sense of nostalgia. They are a versatile treat, with variations that include adding nuts, seeds, or chocolate chips, but the traditional version remains a favorite.
Crunchies or Skurwejantjies are more than just a snack; they are a piece of South African culinary heritage, reflecting the country’s diverse cultural influences and the warmth of its community spirit.
