How to Make Any Recipe Vegan

Turning a regular recipe into a vegan one is easier than you think! Here’s how you can swap out animal-based ingredients without losing any flavor.

How to Vegan-ise a regular yummy recipe, some tips on how to modify and change a regular recipe to become a fully vegan recipe

Some tips to remember if you wish to substitute the following

  1. Milk
  2. Margarine / Butter
  3. Eggs
  4. Cheese
  5. Meat
  6. Honey
  • Replace Milk: Use plant-based milks like almond, soy, oat, or coconut milk. They work in most recipes and taste great!

Milk = Organic Almond Milk or Organic Soy Milk

  • Switch Butter: Swap butter with margarine, coconut oil, or vegan butter spreads.

Margarine / Butter = Savory Baking – Olive Oil.

Margarine / Butter = Sweet or Savory Baking – Earth Balance’s Organic Butter

Margarine / Butter = Sweet Baking use Coconut butter/oil

*I usually use half the sugar in baking recipes, especially when I use coconut butter/oil because it’s naturally sweet as well.

  • Egg Substitutes: Use mashed bananas, applesauce, flaxseed meal (mixed with water), or store-bought egg replacers for baking.

1 egg = Mix 1 TBS Flaxseed Meal with 3 TBS warm water. If you only have Flaxseed and not Meal, put the seed in a coffee grinder and grind to powder, and Voilà, you have Flaxseed Meal.
Let it sit for around 5 minutes, and you’ll see that the consistency looks like an egg, then it’s good to use!
OR
1 egg = 1 banana
OR
1 egg = ¼ cup applesauce

  • Cheese Options: Vegan cheese or nutritional yeast can replace cheese in many dishes.
  • Meat Alternatives: Try tofu (a complete protein), Tempeh (made from fermented soybeans), Seitan (an excellent plant-based protein alternative), Jackfruit (a good source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants), or store-bought vegan meat substitutes.
  • Honey Swap: Use maple syrup, agave, or date syrup for sweetness.

With these easy changes, you can enjoy your favorite dishes while keeping them 100% plant-based!

You might consider turning vegan for a variety of reasons, such as:

  1. Health Benefits: A well-balanced vegan diet can help lower cholesterol, improve heart health, and provide plenty of nutrients.
  2. Animal Welfare: Choosing vegan means no animals are harmed or used in your meals, aligning with a compassionate lifestyle.
  3. Environmental Impact: Vegan diets have a smaller carbon footprint, use less water, and help reduce deforestation compared to diets involving animal products.
  4. Exploring New Foods: Turning vegan often introduces you to a whole world of new ingredients, flavors, and creative cooking methods.
  5. Ethical and Social Values: Supporting sustainable and cruelty-free practices can feel empowering and align with your values.

Whatever your reason, it’s a chance to make a positive impact on your health, the planet, and beyond!
