In Flanders Fields

The poem by John McCrae
In the spring of 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote his now famous poem after seeing poppies growing in battle-scarred fields.

We will remember them🍁

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
        In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
        In Flanders fields.

  2. Thank you for reminding us of Dr. McCrae’s poem. Poppies have become so associated with our Memorial Day that I forget it started with WWI which many countries remember today. But our patriots deserve to be remembered every day. I shared at #51.

  4. Good morning, Esme, the Flanders Field poem brings back memories of Memorial services when I was growing up. The poem was recited each year at the school Memorial service. I can still do it to this day. Thanks so much for the feature for the Orange Almond Biscotti. It’s easy to make and tastes delicious. Have a great week.
