Pumpkin Fritters Indian Goolgulas

Gulgulas / Gool Goolas is something every Indian child grew up eating. It’s an Indian dessert or snack that every Indian mother knows how to make. An Indian version of mini donuts. Basically, they are like sweetened mini donuts/doughnuts. They are super spongy and crispy, fried in oil and can be served with cinnamon sugar or just cinnamon powder in the batter
Ingredients
- 1 cup pumpkin
- 2 cups sifted flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp cinnamon powder
- ½ tsp vanilla essence
- ½ cup of milk
Instructions
Steam the pumpkin until soft (green pumpkin, it is orange in color inside, but you can also use butternut).
Mash the pumpkin with a fork or a masher.
Add the sifted dried ingredients and mix them together.
Gradually add the milk to make a thick batter.
Scoop spoonsful or how big you like your Goolgulas and fry in oil on medium heat.
Enjoy

I heard that Gulgulas is also a classic treat in Fiji. Indians would often share Ggulgula with their friends mainly during Hindu festivals such as Diwali (Festival of Lights) and Holi (Festival of Spring). Now you can also make and enjoy them at home as they are so easy to make (and without yeast) and taste very similar and you may think of them as mini doughnuts.

But what is Gulgula?
You can decide what you wish to call it, but they can go by many different names, i.e. Gulgula / Goolgoola / Gulgule / Pumpkin Fritters / Pumpkin Gulgula / Mini Pumpkin Donuts
This is an Indian version of mini donuts. Basically, they are like sweetened mini donuts and they are sweet, fried, wonderful and so flavorful.
It is also a very traditional South African dish – Pumpkin Fritters aka Pampoen Koekies (in Afrikaans) is a South African dessert made with cooked pumpkin. It can be served with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar or sugar syrup.
