Rosh Hashanah Challah

Rosh Hashanah Challah

Rosh Hashanah Challah.

This is to symbolize the wish for a prosperous new year. The traditional Jewish Sabbath bread, challah, is typically oblong and braided but on Rosh Hashanah, everyone serves round challah to symbolize eternal life.

Ingredients:
2 cups warm water
½ cup oil
½ cup sugar
1 Tbls salt
2 eggs
1 packet instant yeast
6 – 8 cups flour
½ cup raisins (optional)
Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional)

Put all ingredients together and knead the dough.
Allow to rise – double the size.
Knead the dough and plait.
Wait half an hour for them to rise further.
Paint with egg.
Bake at 180C for approximately 20 minutes depending on the oven.

  1. These look so very tasty and funnily I baked the same kind and
other plaited shapes with my mother.
In ‘ buns’ like yours, turned into a circle or even straight lengths.

Part of the ‘ 7 sort coffee parties’ 😊.
