Why You Will Love and Enjoy This Thick and Creamy Banana Protein Smoothie

  • It’s thick and creamy: Frozen bananas give you a lovely ice-cold texture without adding ice that can water down the smoothie.
  • It’s quick to make: Toss everything into the blender, give it a good whiz, and you’re ready to go in minutes.
  • It’s easy to take with you: Pour it into a blender mug or travel cup, and you’ve got a filling option for busy mornings.

Additional Information

  • Can this be frozen? Yes, but I recommend freezing the prepared smoothie only if you plan to enjoy it later as a frozen smoothie bowl or partially thawed drink. Pour it into a freezer-safe container, leaving a little room at the top for expansion, and freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw it in the refrigerator and blend again with a splash of almond milk to bring back the creamy consistency. For the best texture, though, I’d freeze the bananas ahead of time and blend the smoothie fresh. It only takes about a minute, and the result is much creamier.
  • How long can it be stored and how? For the best flavour and texture, drink the smoothie right after blending. If you need to prepare it ahead, keep it in a sealed container or blender mug in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. The smoothie may separate slightly while sitting, so give it a good shake or stir before drinking. If it has thickened too much, add a splash of almond milk and mix again.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Unsweetened almond milk: Use oat milk, soy milk, cashew milk, or another milk of your choice. For a nut-free option, choose oat or soy milk and replace the cashew butter with sunflower seed butter.
  • Cashew butter: Almond butter, peanut butter, or sunflower seed butter will work. Each will give the smoothie a slightly different flavour.
  • Maple syrup: Honey can be used instead, although it will change the flavour slightly. You can also leave it out if your protein powder and bananas are sweet enough.
  • Protein powder: Use your favourite vanilla, unflavoured, or other protein powder. Keep in mind that different protein powders vary in sweetness and thickness, so you may need to adjust the almond milk or maple syrup.
  • Cinnamon or allspice: Use either one, or a small sprinkling of both. Nutmeg can also be added for a warmer flavour.
  • Frozen bananas: Fresh bananas can be used, but the smoothie won’t be as thick or cold. If using fresh bananas, add a few ice cubes, although this may slightly dilute the banana flavour

Description

This Thick and Creamy Banana Protein Smoothie is my easy morning answer when I want something cold, filling, and ready to take with me. Frozen bananas make it thick and creamy, while cashew butter, maple syrup and protein powder give it plenty of flavour and staying power.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 frozen bananas, cut into small chunks
  • 1 to 1 1/4 cups unsweetened almond milk, plus more if needed
  • 1 heaping tsp cashew butter
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • 1 scoop protein powder
  • A sprinkling of cinnamon or allspice, plus more for topping if you like

Instructions

  1. If your frozen bananas are whole or in large pieces, cut 2 frozen bananas into smaller chunks.
  2. This makes life much easier on your blender and helps everything blend evenly.
  3. Add 2 frozen bananas, 1 to 1 1/4 cups unsweetened almond milk, 1 heaping tsp cashew butter, 1 tsp maple syrup, 1 scoop protein powder, and a sprinkling of cinnamon or allspice to your blender.
  4. Blend for about 1 minute, or until the smoothie is completely smooth and has the thickness you like. You may need to stop and scrape down the sides once, especially if your frozen bananas are very firm.
  5. If the smoothie is too thick for your liking, add 1 to 2 tbsp more unsweetened almond milk at a time and blend again. Don’t pour in too much at once or you’ll lose that lovely thick texture.
  6. Pour the smoothie into a large glass or blender cup and finish with a sprinkling of cinnamon or allspice.
  7. I make my smoothie in the morning, pour in my blender mug, and off to work I go.  Come lunchtime, I have a wonderful, healthy, and good meal ready to enjoy. When using frozen banana, the smoothie is still cold and super delicious.

Kitchen note: Frozen bananas are the trick here. They keep the smoothie wonderfully cold without needing ice, which can water down the banana flavour.
