Crumbling into Autumn: Apple Walnut Crumble Squares

Layer One: Crafting the Perfect Base

Softened butter, sugar, and an egg have been expertly combined with flour, a touch of salt, and vanilla to create a dough ideal for Apple Walnut Crumble Squares. This dough needs a brief rest in the cool confines of a refrigerator. Once rolled out, it undergoes blind baking. This process ensures a firm and crisp layer ready to embrace the rich fillings above.

The Heart of the Matter: Crafting the Apple-Filling

Ripe apples were carefully selected, peeled, and cubed, setting the stage for their sweet evolution. A sprinkle of sugar or honey, enriched with cinnamon, blanketed the apples. This concoction simmered until each piece softened perfectly. This approach, both straightforward and traditional, ensures the filling’s rustic charm and a deep, comforting sweetness with every bite.

Creating the Crumble: A Mix of Sweet and Crunchy

Making the walnut crumble topping will be a favorite step for many. First, you will need to mix sugar or erythritol and flour in one bowl. This creates a sweet base that perfectly complements the walnuts’ crunchiness. Next, blend in softened butter by hand until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Adding chopped walnuts brings a crunch that enhances the apple squares, creating an irresistible autumn dessert.

Layering the Squares

First, ensure the short-crust pastry is snug in a greased baking dish. Spoon over this base the spiced apple filling, achieving an even spread. Crown this with a generous distribution of walnut crumble topping. This sequence guarantees not only a burst of flavors but also a rich textural experience. Creatively adjust, perhaps by sprinkling extra walnuts atop for an enhanced crunch.

Enjoying and Preserving Your Apple Walnut Crumble Squares

To transform these apple walnut crumble squares into an unforgettable treat, sprinkle them with powdered sugar for a gentle sweetness and an attractive look. Complementing these squares with a scoop of vanilla ice cream will provide an exquisite balance of warmth and coolness, ideal for cozy fall evenings. Keep any uneaten squares in a tightly sealed container at room temperature. This method will ensure they stay fresh, and their texture remains perfect.

Blind baking is baking a pie crust or pastry case before adding the filling, using “baking beans” *** (or pie weights, rice, etc.) to prevent puffing and ensure a crisp, well-shaped crust. This is to prevent the bottom of the crust from puffing up, or the sides of the crust from slouching down.
      ***What to Use as Weights:
Baking Beans/Pie Weights: These are specifically designed ceramic or metal beads that can be used repeatedly.
Dried Beans: Any type of dried beans (like kidney beans, pinto beans, etc.) work well.
Uncooked Rice: Rice can also be used as a weight
