Hot chicken is a type of fried chicken that is a local specialty of Nashville, Tennessee, in the United States.

Best Nashville-style Hot Chicken Sandwich

Rochelle just had to recreate her own version of a Nashville hot chicken sandwich. What do you think of this? Do try it out and let us know, as I am sure you will also LOVE it.

Cook Time 20 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 250g Butter
  • 3 Tbsp. Cayenne Pepper
  • 2 tsp. Paprika
  • 1 tsp. Garlic Powder
  • 2 tsp. Brown Sugar
  • Salt & Pepper to taste

Brioche Buns

  • 2-3 Cups Bread Flour
  • 1/3 Cup Cake Flour
  • 2 tsp. Yeast
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 2 Tbsp. Sugar
  • 1 Large Egg (beaten)
  • 2½ tsp. Butter
  • 3 Tbsp. Warm Milk
  • 1 Cup Warm Water
  • 1 Egg (egg wash)
  • 1 Cup Water (steam)

Instructions

Nashville Hot Butter Sauce

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the cayenne, brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Heat and stir until all the ingredients are combined.
  3. Spoon the sauce while still warm over the fried chicken.

Brioche Buns

  1. Whisk the water, milk, egg, yeast, and sugar together.
  2. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Add the flour, salt, and butter to the bowl of the mixer.
  4. Mix until it resembles crumbs.
  5. Pour in the liquid and mix for about 5 minutes.
  6. Turn out onto a surface and work the dough for about 5 minutes.
  7. Place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp dish towel, and place in a warm area to rise for about an hour or until doubled in size.
  8. Divide into 8 pieces, shape, and place on a baking sheet.
  9. Cover and allow it to rise for another hour.
  10. Just before baking, place a baking sheet on the bottom rack of the oven, and pour in the water to create steam.
  11. Brush the buns with egg, and bake in the oven at 180C / 350F for 18-20 minutes.
  12. Remove from the oven and cover with a dry dish towel until cooled.
  13. Enjoy!!

What is different about this Best Nashville-style Hot Chicken Sandwich?

As you’d expect, Nashville hot chicken is fried chicken with a major kick. The chicken gets a hefty dose of spice thanks to hot sauce and cayenne in the coating as well as a spicy sauce drizzled over the top. This version of fried chicken is served with white bread and pickles to help balance out the heat.
