Ingredients
- 2 cups pea flour
- 1 cup self-raising flour
- A dash of salt
- 1 tsp curry masala (like GORIMA Magi Kashmiri masala, or your favorite blend)
- 1 tsp of jeera / cumin
- 1 tsp koljana / ground coriander
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 1 tsp crushed garlic
- 1/2 cup chopped spinach or coriander (dhania)
- 1 egg
- 1 grated potato
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1–2 chopped chilies (adjust to your heat preference)
- Chopped onions

Instructions
- Combine the dry ingredients, flours, spices, and salt, into a bowl.
- Toss in the chopped chilies, onions, and spinach and mix.
- Beat the egg with a splash of water to create your wet mix.
- Pour this into the dry ingredients and stir until you have a smooth batter.
- If it feels a bit stiff, add more water little by little.
- Just before frying in a deep pot or pan, mix in the baking powder. This will make the daltjies nice and puffy.
- Heat some sunflower oil in a deep pan.
- When it’s hot enough, scoop out a teaspoon of batter and use another teaspoon to gently slide it into the oil.
- Fry in small batches until golden brown and crispy.
- Transfer them onto paper towels to soak up any extra oil.
- Serve with your favorite dip, mint yogurt, tamarind chutney, or even a garlicky one.
Daltjies are comfort food with a kick, perfect for any occasion or no occasion at all. Give this recipe a go, and let the flavors speak for themselves.

I don’t know these but they sound AMAZING! Yummo!!! I do love ‘Indian’ style snacks….so good. It is very interesting to me that South Africa has these and curries as traditional food….history is hidden in cuisine.
Hi Lydia. The Cape Malay and Indian population are huge, and they have lots and lots of delicious foods and made it their own in the Cape.
