Falafel

Falafel is a deep-fried ball, doughnut, or patty made from ground chickpeas, fava beans, or both.

Falafel is a traditional Middle Eastern food, that most likely originated in Egypt.

I opted to chop it into cubes, add chopped tomatoes, chopped cucumber, and chopped spring onions, mix together with mayonnaise, fill the pita to make it extra special, and top with chopped chives.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tins chickpeas, drained.
  • 1 onion, finely chopped.
  • ¼ cup parsley.
  • 4 garlic cloves, peeled.
  • 1 tbsp. lemon juice.
  • 2 tsp cumin powder.
  • 1 tsp salt.
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp red chili flakes.
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs.

Method:

  • Add all the ingredients, except the breadcrumbs to the bowl of your food processor.
  • Pulse, until all the ingredients are well combined.
  • Pour into a bowl, add the breadcrumbs, and mix until well combined.
  • Smooth and pat down into the bowl.
  • Cling wrap and pop into the fridge for 2-3 hours.
  • Using an ice cream scoop, create balls.
  • Heat some oil in a pan add a couple of balls at a time and allow to fry until golden brown.

  1. Bobby, your dish is delicious! Falafel is one of my favorite vegan dishes, and it makes an excellent breakfast when teamed with sauce and salad. I followed the instructions exactly, and the dish was delightfully crispy on the outside and mushy on the interior. I’ve heard we may bake these instead of deep frying them; could you kindly provide the recipe and instructions?

    1. Hi Lucy Thank you for visiting and dropping your comment and feedback. Unfortunately, I am unable to reach Bobby so will not be able to give you a response on your question as to this specific recipe.

But some other recipes indicated the following to bake them: Hope this will help.
Roll dough into meatball-sized balls and gently flatten each into a little patty.
Place patties on a heavy-rimmed baking sheet, preferably one that’s dark in color. Brush each patty with canola oil, flip them over and brush the other side.
Roast for 15 minutes, then flip them over and roast for another 10 minutes, until crisp and golden on both sides.
