Additional Information

  • Can I use cocoa instead of Milo? Yes. Use 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder, but expect a less sweet and more chocolaty flavour.
  • What type of coconut should I use? Desiccated coconut works best because it mixes evenly into the biscuit mixture and coats the outside nicely. Fine or medium desiccated coconut will both work.
  • What if my mixture is too sticky? Refrigerate it for 10 to 15 minutes before rolling. This usually makes a noticeable difference.
  • What if my mixture feels too dry? Check that you used the full amount of condensed milk and crushed the biscuits finely. If your biscuit packet was unusually large, the proportions can shift.
  • Can I make these smaller or larger? Absolutely. Smaller balls will give you more pieces, while larger ones will need a little more chilling time to firm up.
  • How long can they be stored? Keep them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 5 to 7 days. They’re best kept chilled because the condensed milk keeps the centres soft.
  • Can I substitute the Marie biscuits? Yes. Plain tea biscuits or another crisp, plain sweet biscuit can be used. Choose something with a similar texture so the mixture holds together properly.
  • Can I substitute the coconut? Unsweetened desiccated coconut is the easiest substitute for both the mixture and coating. Sweetened coconut can also work, but the finished bites will be sweeter.
  • Can I use a dairy-free condensed milk? Yes, if you need a dairy-free version, use a dairy-free sweetened condensed milk that has a similar consistency. The flavour and texture may vary slightly
  • .Are the biscuits gluten-free? Traditional Marie biscuits generally contain wheat, so use certified gluten-free plain biscuits if gluten is a concern and check the labels of all ingredients

Instructions

  1. Put 1 packet of Marie biscuits into a large bowl and crush them until they’re fine, with just a few tiny crumbs left. You don’t want big chunks because they’ll make the mixture harder to roll.
  2. Add 4 tbsp Milo and 1/2 cup desiccated coconut to the crushed Marie biscuits. If you’re using cocoa instead, add 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder.
  3. Pour in 1 tin sweetened condensed milk and mix everything really well. The mixture should be thick, sticky and easy enough to press together.
  4. If the mixture feels too sticky to handle, pop the bowl into the fridge for 10 to 15 minutes. This little step makes rolling much less messy.
  5. Take about 1 tsp of the mixture at a time and roll it between your palms to make small balls.
  6. Roll each ball in extra desiccated coconut until completely coated.
  7. Place the Milo Coconut Snowballs in the fridge for at least 30 minutes, or until firm.
  8. Keep the Milo Coconut Snowballs refrigerated in an airtight container.
