Why You Will Love and Enjoy This Granadilla Ginger Mint Water

  • It makes plain water more interesting: Granadilla adds fresh fruity flavour without turning it into a heavy juice.
  • The ginger and mint wake things up: Fresh ginger gives it a gentle zing, while mint keeps every sip tasting fresh.
  • It’s quick to make: Toss everything into a jug, chill for 30 minutes, and you’re ready to pour.

Additional Information

  • Can this be frozen? Yes, but I wouldn’t recommend freezing the finished drink in a large container. The granadilla pulp, mint, and ginger can change texture after thawing, and the fresh flavour won’t be quite the same. If you want to freeze it, pour the strained water into ice cube trays and freeze it for up to 1 month, then add the cubes to fresh water when serving.
  • How long can it be stored and how? Store it covered in the fridge for up to 24 hours for the best flavour and freshness. If you’re keeping it longer, I’d strain out the mint and ginger after the initial infusion so their flavours don’t become too strong or bitter.
  • Do I need to strain the granadilla? No. The seeds are edible and can be left in, but you can strain the drink if you prefer a smoother texture.
  • Can I make it sweeter? Absolutely. Start with 1 tsp honey, taste after chilling, and add more if needed.
  • Can I drink it immediately? You can, but giving it 30 minutes in the fridge allows the ginger and mint flavours to infuse properly.
  • Can I use sparkling water? Yes. For a fizzy version, infuse the granadilla, ginger, mint, and honey in a small amount of still water first. Strain if you prefer, then top it up with chilled sparkling water just before serving.
  • Does the ginger need to be julienned? Thin strips help the ginger release its flavour into the water. You can also slice it thinly if that’s easier.
  • Can I add lemon or lime? Yes. A squeeze of fresh lemon or lime would add a lovely sharp note and make the drink even more refreshing.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Granadilla: Use fresh passion fruit if granadillas aren’t available. You can also try sliced strawberries, peaches, oranges, or berries, although the flavour will be different.
  • Honey: Substitute with maple syrup or your preferred sweetener. You can also leave it out for an unsweetened version.
  • Fresh ginger: Ground ginger isn’t a direct substitute here, as it won’t infuse in quite the same way. If you don’t have fresh ginger, simply leave it out or add a few thin slices of fresh lemon for extra zing.
  • Fresh mint: Try fresh basil or lemon balm for a different flavour. You can also leave the herbs out if you prefer a simple fruit-infused water.

Description

It’s lightly sweet, refreshing, and has a lovely little zing from fresh ginger and mint.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3 granadillas
  • 500 ml water
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 piece fresh ginger, about 2 cm thick, peeled and cut into julienne strips
  • A few fresh mint sprigs

Instructions

  1. Scoop the pulp from 3 granadillas into a jug or large glass jar.
  2. Add 500 ml water, 1 tsp honey, 1 piece of fresh ginger, about 2 cm thick, peeled and cut into julienne strips, and a few fresh mint sprigs.
  3. Stir well until the 1 tsp honey has mostly dissolved. If the honey is stubborn, mix it with a small splash of warm water first, then add it to the jug.
  4. Cover the jug or jar and place it in the fridge for at least 30 minutes so the ginger and mint have time to infuse the water.
  5. Give the fruity sater another stir before serving. Taste it and add a little more honey if you prefer it sweeter.
  6. Serve chilled, with ice if you like.
  7. You can leave the granadilla seeds in for a bit of crunch, or strain the water if you prefer a smoother drink.
