What is the secret to making good bread?

Egg wash turns the bread golden and gives a softer crust. Milk washes in the last few minutes are good for a sandwich-style loaf and give a glossy brown, soft crust. Brush loaves or rolls with oil or water and roll in seeds or grains to coat before baking. The oil softens the crust, water keeps it crisper.

Why is my homemade bread so dense?

Dense or heavy bread can result from not kneading the dough long enough and mixing the salt and yeast together or Losing patience in the middle of molding your bread if there is not enough tension in your finished loaf before baking.

What does milk do for bread?

Milk creates bread that is richer and has a more velvety texture. Milk makes a softer crust that will brown more quickly due to the sugar and butterfat in milk. Milk also improves the keeping quality of bread and contributes nutrients.

  1. Hi I tried this bread and it says to bake it for 20 minutes and I did and it wasn’t done. I’m new to baking bread, I dumped it out and saw that it wasn’t done and put it ba k in the pan to bake more I hope it turns out OK. I will be bummed if it doesn’t.

    • I am sorry that you seem to have issues with this recipe. You always have to test any baking with a baking pin to ensure that it’s done and baked fully. The reason could be that your oven is cooler than 180C / 350F. I truly hope that when you take it out again that it will be fine. This recipe was prepared, tried, and tested by Jennifer from one of my Facebook groups and I trust her baking. She’s awesome and will not provide a recipe that’s not correct. As mentioned, you may wish to test your oven with a thermometer you place in the oven to make sure the temperature is truly 180C / 350F.

    • Hi Kim. Thank you for popping in and I am glad that you wish to try this. I did not make this bread myself but my friend Jennifer did. I think she used regular cake flour. I will double check with her and get back to you.

    • Hi Cherie, The smell of baking bread wafting through the house, is something that I will always love. I will bake bread every day just for the smell of freshly baked bread. Do not get me wrong, I love to eat it as well, but it does not like me, so I have to be cautious of bread
