Description

These Vegan Melting Snowman Cake Pops are messy in the best way and honestly look even cuter when they’re a little uneven. They’re soft, chocolatey, and fun to decorate, especially if you’re making them with kids or just feeling festive in your kitchen late at night with melted chocolate everywhere.

Cake Pops

Decorating

  • Vegan white chocolate or vegan brown chocolate, melted
  • Mini Oreo cookies
  • Small candies for the eyes and nose
  • Decorating icing for the mouth
  • Square pretzels

Instructions

  1. Preheat your cake pop machine according to the manufacturer’s directions. Most machines heat pretty quickly, so I usually get the batter ready first, so I’m not rushing later.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together the 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup sugar, 1/2 tsp bicarbonate soda, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1 Tbsp cocoa powder.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the 3/4 cup sunflower oil, 1/2 cup coconut milk, and 1 Tbsp vinegar. Let it sit for about 1 minute so it slightly thickens. Stir in the flax egg.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently until combined.
  5. Don’t overmix it, or the cake pops can turn a bit dense. The batter should be smooth but still thick enough to spoon.
  6. Lightly grease the cake pop machine if needed, then fill each cavity about 3/4 full.
  7. If you overfill them, they puff out everywhere. Bake according to your machine’s directions, usually around 4 to 6 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Transfer the cake pop balls to a cooling rack, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  9. Cold cake pops are much easier to dip and won’t fall apart in warm chocolate.
  10. Melt the vegan white chocolate or vegan brown chocolate in the microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between each round. Don’t let it get too hot or super runny, as it’ll slide right off the cake pops instead of coating them properly.
  11. Using a toothpick or skewer, carefully dip each cold cake pop into the melted chocolate. Let the excess drip off for a few seconds.
  12. Place each coated cake pop onto a square pretzel, so it stays in place and gives that melted snowman look. Parchment paper works too, but the pretzel really helps stop rolling.
  13. While the chocolate is still slightly sticky, press on a mini Oreo cookie for the hat. Add small candies for the eyes and nose before the coating fully sets.
  14. Leave the cake pops to set completely. Overnight works best because the chocolate firms up nicely and the decorations stay put.
  15. Pipe on the mouths using decorating icing just before serving or once everything is fully firm.

Additional Information

  • The cake pops should be frozen solid before dipping. Cold and firm is perfect, as frozen cake pops can crack the chocolate coating.
  • The decorating stage moves quickly, so it helps to have the Oreo hats, candies, and pretzels ready before dipping starts. Once the chocolate begins setting, decorations won’t stick properly.
  • Some vegan white chocolates don’t melt smoothly and can become thick or grainy. If that happens, adding 1 tsp of coconut oil usually helps loosen it.
  • Can I make these without a cake pop machine? Yes. Bake the batter in mini muffin tins at 350⁰F (180⁰C) for about 10 to 12 minutes.
  • Do I need sticks for these? No. These are styled more like melting snowballs, so serving them without sticks actually works really well.
  • Can I use regular milk instead of coconut milk? Any unsweetened plant milk works, though coconut milk gives a softer texture.
Storage and Freezing
  • Can this be frozen? Yes. Freeze the undecorated cake pops in an airtight container for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge before decorating.
  • How long can they be stored and how? Store finished cake pops in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. If your kitchen is cool, they’ll also keep at room temperature for about 2 days.
Ingredient Substitutions
  • Sunflower oil can be replaced with canola oil or melted vegan butter
  • Coconut milk can be swapped with oat milk or almond milk
  • Flax egg can be replaced with a chia egg
  • Vegan brown chocolate works well if vegan white chocolate is hard to find
  • Mini Oreos can be replaced with any small vegan sandwich cookie

Nobody expects cake pops to look this playful and homemade.
