Grilled cheese sandwich

A toasted sandwich, grilled cheese sandwich, cheese toastie, or grilled cheese is a hot sandwich (toastie) made with one or more varieties of cheese (a cheese sandwich) on bread. It is typically prepared by heating one or more slices of cheese between slices of bread, with a cooking fat such as butter, on a frying pan, griddle, or sandwich toaster, until the bread browns and the cheese melts. Grilled cheese may contain separate ingredients, though the main ingredients remain the bread and cheese.

History

The cheese dream, an open-faced grilled cheese sandwich, became popular in the U.S. during the Great Depression. U.S. government cookbooks describe Navy cooks broiling “American cheese filling sandwiches” during World War II.

Description

I helped a coffee shop with its menu and recipes. Here’s an easy way to add flavor to a grilled sandwich.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Instructions

  1. Butter mix
  2. Mix all the ingredients together.
  3. Spread some evenly on the inside of one of the slices of bread.
  4. Layer the cheese closest to the butter, the fat in the butter helps to melt the
    cheese.
  5. Add the rest of what you want – ham, bacon, spinach, etc.
  6. Spread a thin layer of butter on the outsides of the sandwich and grill.
  7. You can save the rest of the mixture in the fridge to use later.
  8. Tip: We used a “German bread” – the same as the sourdough bread you get
    here, although not as sour.
  9. You can also use fresh herbs which will be better, but you will have to use it
    faster.

  1. My parents had this amazing plug-in two-sided griddle when I was young and my dad (86 years old) still has it. Every sandwich that my mom made in this was fantastic. Anyway, this brought up a really nice memory for me. I really appreciate that as I lost my dear mom 4 months ago.

    1. Hi Elise. Thank you for popping in and I just love my griller. It’s a very plain and no-nonsense one, but I have used it multiple times this past week for a quick bite for lunch as I prefer that to a toaster because when I put some cheese in it the griller works best as it can melt and be oh so delicious. Sorry to hear about your Mom, hugs
