Macaroni and cheeseā€”also calledĀ mac and cheeseĀ inĀ American,Ā Canadian, andĀ macaroni pieĀ inĀ Caribbean English;Ā andĀ macaroni cheeseĀ in theĀ United Kingdom is a dish ofĀ EnglishĀ origin, consisting of cookedĀ macaroniĀ pasta and aĀ cheeseĀ sauce, most commonlyĀ cheddar. It can also incorporate other ingredients, such as bread crumbs, meat and vegetables.
Traditional macaroni and cheese is aĀ casseroleĀ baked in the oven; however, it may be prepared in a sauce pan on top of the stove or using aĀ packaged mix.Ā The cheese is often first incorporated into aĀ BĆ©chamel sauceĀ (milk gravy) to give aĀ Mornay sauceĀ which is then added to the pasta. In the United States it is considered aĀ comfort food.
